This rivet installation is an example of the multiple deforming body capability of DEFORM™, which was first published in 1994.  While the analysis of multiple bodies during small deflection is possible with some general purpose codes, large deformation of multiple plastic bodies requires a very powerful analysis capability with a sophisticated contact algorithm to generate accurate results.  This simulation is indicative of advanced DEFORM capabilities that are frequently used by fastener manufacturers and their customers.

Over the years, a wide range of 3D mechanical joining simulations have been presented and published.  The installation of staked and self-clinching fasteners are other frequent targets of DEFORM simulation.
